(Photo: United Airlines) China SHARE 474 CONNECT 70 TWEET 6 COMMENTEMAILMORE United Airlines will make Los Angeles its second base for pilots who fly its Boeing 787 Dreamliners, according to FlightGlobal.com’s Edward Russell . Russell writes “subsidiary Continental captains and first officers will fly the aircraft when the base opens,” adding that “a timeline (for) when that will occur has not been set.” United first began flying the Dreamliner in November of 2012 . Until now, the carrier’s 787 pilot base has been at its hub at Houston Bush Intercontinental. The establishment of a 787 pilot base at LAX comes as United increasingly looks to deploy its Dreamliners on Asian routes from the West Coast. ARCHIVES: First Dreamliner passengers sing new jet’s praises (October 2011) “Our 2014 international schedule has the 787 flying many routes to Asia,” Howard Attarian, United’s senior vice-president of flight operations, is quoted by FlightGlobal as saying in a September letter to United’s flight operations group. “In August, we told you that we believe this amount of flying warrants a west coast 787 base to reliably support our network. We have decided that LAX is the right location for this 787 base.” United’s trans-Pacific Dreamliner routes from the West Coast include flights from LAX to Shanghai and Tokyo Narita and soon-to-launch 787 routes between Seattle and Tokyo, San Francisco and Osaka and San Francisco and Chengdu, China . Also in western United States, United offers a trans-Pacific flight to Tokyo out of its Denver hub. Clint Dempseys hamstring issue (Where did he get this thing? No one seems to know.) has kept the U.S. attacker out of Seattles last two matches. Even if Dempseys condition improves, Seattle is likely to lobby for keeping him, for playoff positioning and Supporters Shield pursuits next week. Considering Dempsey is Major League Soccers top wage earner, it seems like a reasonable request. (MORE: U.S. Soccer and Jones refute reports of injury) Jermaine Jones status may be up in the air; reports out of Germany say surgery will have Jones on the shelf for a few weeks. But Jones and U.S. Soccer are refuting those reports, so stay tuned on this one. Either way, if Jones has a knee issue, its fair to wonder if Schalke will be excited about extra travel and matches that are, officially speaking, meaningless. U.S. center back Clarence Goodson was a scratch from Sundays match at Chivas USA after suffering a bone bruise on the knee in the Earthquakes previous contest. Goodson, recall, was the starter alongside Omar Gonzalez as the United States clinched its spot earlier this month with the win over Mexico. Goodson may have slipped lately on the depth chart (blame young up-and-comer Anthony Brooks for that), but his steady night against El Tri reminded everyone that a tested, reliable veteran is great to have around.

The duo recorded a demo tape, which began circulating around the Seattle musical community and, in the process, earned them a cult following. Drummer Jason Finn, a member of Love Battery, saw the duo in 1991 and, after a few years of persuading, joined the band in 1993. Within a year after Finn joined, the Presidents became one of the most popular bands in Seattle. In the spring of 1994, they released their eponymous debut album on Pop Llama Records. The record became an independent hit and the band attracted the attention of major record labels; the group eventually signed with Columbia Records, who re-released the Presidents’ debut in the spring of 1995. By this time, Finn had left Love Battery to become a full-time President. The Presidents of the United States of America became a hit in the summer of 1995, when MTV and modern rock radio began airing “Lump” frequently. “Lump,” followed by the radio hit “Kitty” in the fall and the radio/video hit “Peaches” in the spring of 1996, propelled the album to a surprise Top Ten double-platinum status. The band quickly capitalized on their sudden success by releasing their second album, The Presidents of the United States of America: II , in November of 1996. In December of 1997, the Presidents called it quits after Chris Ballew left the band to spend more time with his family. A farewell concert followed in February 1998 and a rarities album, Pure Frosting, was released in March. Rumors of a possible reunion and collaboration with fellow Seattle resident Sir Mix-a-Lot (under the collective name Subset) floated around in 1999, but the project never materialized.
